This week Marinanow invites you to Liguria, Imperia, to discover one of its marvelous marinas: Porto Maurizio.

Porto Maurizio

Porto Maurizio, perched on the promontory of Parasio, offers spectacular views for those coming from the sea.

It was probably founded by the Romans, and became an autonomous village in the Middle Ages. After the Napoleonic period it was annexed to Piedmont and then it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Since 1923 it has been merged with Oneglia and other smaller centres in what is still today the new town of Imperia. Its historic centre is a wonderful tangle of narrow streets and lanes leading to the highest medieval area, offering a large and magnificent view of the Gulf.

Parasio is rich in ancient monuments and palaces, among which the most famous ones are: the Cathedral of St. Maurizio, the largest church in the entire Liguria; the Loggia of Santa Chiara, from which you can admire a breathtaking panorama; the home of St. Leonardo, patron saint of Imperia; the Oratory of St. Peter, located to the west of the Parasio and featuring a beautiful Baroque facade.

In the centre of Porto Maurizio you can enjoy wonderful walks between shops, pastry shops and historic bars. But if you are looking for a restaurant for the evening or venues to enjoy music and entertainment in the evenings, we recommend choosing the ancient area of the Marina and the Foce, both located at the foot of Parasio.

From Borgo Marina, where you can also find the harbour, you can walk through the splendid “Passeggiata degli innamorati”, which will lead you to Borgo Foce, the ancient and charming fishing village with its small characteristic port.

Imperia is also home to numerous events that take place throughout the year making it famous internationally. For example, the show of vintage sailboats, which takes place at Borgo Marina every two years in September, is a true competition between vintage sailboats that for the occasion gather here from all over the world. The event is accompanied by the Vintage Motoryacht at Oneglia.

The Marina

Porto Maurizio is protected by a long jetty with a West-South-East direction and from the north-south by the “Pastorelli” jetty: outside there are three piers sheltered from an embankment.

It is located in the Borgo Marina area famous for its fine sandy golden beach that attracts visitors all year round that choose this harbour to moor their boats, both sailing and motor.

It has about 651 berths up to 40 metres in length with drafts of over 5 metres. Moorings are equipped with all the necessary amenities: water, electricity and 24-hour surveillance, and are protected from all the major winds, ensuring a safe and comfortable mooring for those wishing to stay overnight.

The port access time is continuous and the staff will be at your disposal for any need.
