This week Marinanow takes you to the south of the Italian peninsula where we will explore the town of Belvedere Marittimo. This is a jewel of Calabrese tourism with its welcoming harbour: Porto Turistico Riva di Scidro.
The town and its coast
Belvedere Marittimo is located in the enchanting Riviera dei Cedri, on the Tirrenica Cosentina Coast. and has ancient origins with prehistoric remains throughout the land as well as traces of Greeks and Romans.
The centre of the town is divided into two parts: the medieval town, that rises up on a rocky ledge about 150m above sea level; and the marine part built on the coast and containing the Marina di Belvedere.
Most noteworthy, the medieval town known as Castel Normanno is historically one of the areas that has been inhabited for the longest time. It is where the first houses were built, protected from the Saracen invasions.
While, in the last 50 years the marina area has been developed that has turned the town into a real tourist centre with equipment and structures of the highest quality.
The coastal zone of the Riviera dei Cedri is among the most beautiful in the whole of Calabria. The coast alternates between cliffs, natural creeks and sandy stretches.
That being said, without a doubt the main attractions of this area are the islands: Isola di Dino, Isola di Cirella and Scoglio della Regina. These mark out the protected area of the Regional Marine Park of Riviera dei Cedri.
There are numerous natural marine grottoes like the Grotta dell’Arcomagno at San Nicola Arcella. These can be visited by boat and for the lovers of snorkeling, exploring the seabed with breathtaking dives.
Today Belvedere Marittimo is a jewel in the crown of Calabrese tourism. You can walk down its narrow streets and discover antique monuments or dine in its restaurants and savour the flavoursome cuisine.
With a multifaceted culture and a history and traditions of the people that have inhabited this wonderful land, this growing hub is an obligatory stop off for point for nautical tourism in this region.
Porto Turistico Riva di Scidro
The marina of Belvedere Marittimo, known as “Riva di Scidro”, is found at Capo Tirone. It is protected by a North-South breakwater that divides the mouth. It is composed of two docks, one at the north with a quay and the other at the south. The southern one is reserved for boats in transit. The docks are separated by a turning basin.
As a result, the Porto Turistico Riva di Scidro is a highly welcoming and well-stocked structure that is able to guarantee a peaceful and safe stay.
The port has around 300 berths up to 18 metres in length.
