Rent your boat with Marinanow!
This week Marinanow invites you to the Viareggio coast to participate in one of the most popular events among sailors: The Regatta of Cetaceans
Until March 10th you can register and choose your boat from among our proposals!
A sports and naturalistic event
This initiative, which sees the participation of Italy and France, was created in 2004 from an idea of Giovanni Soldini and Fabrizio Tellarini, the two sailors famous for their victories in solo ocean racings.
The Regatta of the Cetaceans is the first “long race” of the season: 150 miles of racing from Viareggio to Tino Island, Giraglia, and Viareggio again.
A crossing that lasts more than a day, with waking shifts and rests during night navigation, and intense commitment to always taking the boat to the maximum.
The organisation of this important sporting event has been managed, from the beginning, by the Circolo Vela Mare based in Viareggio and also many companies, organisations and associations. It has the patronage of important institutions and ministries and sees the close and indispensable collaboration of the Ce.Tu.S. (Center for Research on Cetaceans Viareggio) which also provides the whale watching permits on sailboats.
Since 2004 the success among fans of the sector and the number of participants has been growing year on year.
In fact the event, which is divided between sport, culture, the environment and entertainment, aims to focus the attention on the natural resources of the ecosystem present in the Sanctuary: about six thousand cetaceans and twenty thousand marine mammals.
During this initiative, schools across Europe are involved in a drawing contest for youth awareness on these issues, which rewards the winners with a day boat for whale watching with marine biologists from Ce.Tu.S.
Each year about 100 students (from kindergarten to high school) have the opportunity to admire marine mammals directly in their natural habitat and in parallel to live a unique experience aboard a sailboat.
The regatta provides various levels of difficulty and commitment in terms of miles and time. You can participate with your own boats or as a crew member on one of several boats. Marinanow has selected some of the best offers available!
The routes are varied and can be divided into three distinct phases:
- ACT 1 in March / April:
The offshore route for Whales: Viareggio – Tino Island – Giraglia Island (Corsica) – Viareggio approximately 150 miles.
The coastal route for Dolphins is divided into two parts:
First part: Viareggio – Livorno – Viareggio approximately 35 nautical miles.
Second part: Viareggio – Forte dei Marmi – Viareggio approximately 15 nautical miles.
- ACT 2 in August:
Regatta reserved for keeled boats (monohulls and catamarans) in a triangular course in front of Lido di Camaiore.
- ACT 3 in May:
