This week Marinanow brings you to Sardinia, in Ogliastra, to visit the beautiful marina and the dramatic cliffs of Arbatax.

Arbatax and Ogliastra

Arbatax, situated on the Capo Bellavista peninsula, is located in the center of the east coast of Sardinia, in one of the most beautiful areas of Sardinia: the Ogliastra Region.

The most populous city of the region is Tortorlì, which includes the Bay of Arbatax, famous for its history and the characteristic reddish colour of its rocks.

The etymology of the name is uncertain and mysterious. According to some scholars, it derives from the Arabic arba’at ‘ashar (arba’ṭash dialect), which means “fourteen”, indicating the fourteenth watchtower on the Sardinian coast (the town is still overlooked by a well preserved “Spanish tower”) but the Arab presence in the area was probably too short to affect so deeply its topography.

The region is mostly flat and extends to the sea. It is rich in citrus groves and is famous for the striking beauty of the coasts of red Porphyry and white beaches (including the Lido di Orrì and Porto Frailis).

The red rocks are one of the main points of attraction of the seaside district. This site is located inside the village and at the foot of the hill of Bellavista. The shoreline here is in part made up of granite pebbles and red porphyry and the rest by cliffs.

Around Arbatax there are also the fascinating mountains of the Gennargentu: vast forests, rich in age-old traditions and shrubs that give life to evocative landscapes. Sardinian Railways with the Green Train, organise day trips starting from the Arbatax Station to the mountains and its villages, letting you visit these wild and unspoiled places.

Especially in recent years the region has been enriched with the presence of many tourist resorts and hotels as well as campsites located in the most beautiful coves of the coast attracting large numbers of visitors. Furthermore, in the territory of Tortolì there are many archaeological sites of great historical and scenic interest.
Along the streets of the town it is possible to live the experience of “Su Logu de s’Iscultura” a contemporary and open sky art museum that offers works by artists such as Mauro Staccioli, Antonio Levolella, Umberto Mariani, Maria Lai, Ascanio Renda, Peter Coltella and Hitetoski Magasawa.

Finally, to taste the local cuisine is a must: the bottarga (dried fish roe), coming from the pond of Arbatax, is considered arguably the best on the island.

 The Tourist Port

The tourist port of Marina di Arbatax is located within the Port of Arbatax at the centre of the Eastern Sardinian Coast. It is 8 miles far from Capo Montesanto, where the Gulf of Orosei begins, and close to the loop of Capo Bellavista, where the ferries for Genoa and Civitavecchia depart.

Safe and accessible all year, it has more than 650 berths, can accommodate vessels up to a maximum length of 85 metres with a draught of 8 metres and is big enough to accomodato very large room for manoeuvres.

For maximum safety of guests and boats, there is also video surveillance system and night guards.

The marina also offers mechanical and electrical services, storage in the shipyards, hauling and launching by travel lift up to 200 tons and underwater hull cleaning.

For those who want to explore the country and take a trip in the area, or go up to the beautiful town of Tortolì, it is useful rent bikes and scooters that allow you to enjoy both the coast and the hinterland.

And if you wish to spend your time tasting the delicacies of the local cuisine The Restaurant Lounge Bar Arbatax Marina offers a wide selection of dishes of the Ogliastra tradition or alternatively, for pizza lovers, a chance to taste the real Neapolitan pizza, the result of the expert hands of Matteo, the chef coming directly from Campania.

Perfect for breakfast, cocktails and small relaxing breaks, a tasty snack or a happy hour, The Bar welcomes you in its lovely terrace under the stars! A young and modern atmosphere, fresh and bright, it’s the ideal place to meet and enjoy the beautiful view this delightful marina offers.

A few steps from the port you can also find all the main shops: fishmongers, butchers, pastry shop, supermarket, pharmacy, petrol stations, a nautical shop and tobacco shop.

The Arbatax Marina has also adopted a very strict environmental policy and believes in sustainable development, carefully protecting the health of its guests. The waste collection service is very efficient and strictly observes the environmental protection plans.
