Shortly after the end of Barcolana, a new important event for the Adriatic sailing season arrives: on Sunday, October 15th, the X edition of the Veleziana, the great sailing classic, will arrive in the San Marco Basin in Venice.
More than two hundred boats will take part in the competition, some of which will arrive directly from the Barcolana, symbolising a relay between the two cities, Trieste and Venice, the undisputed capitals of sailing in the Adriatic.
Among the protagonists of the 49th Barcolana who will challenge in the Venetian waters will be: Spirit of Portopiccolo, the winner of Trieste’s regatta Maxi Jena, the boat of Mitja Kosmina that won the last two editions of Veleziana and Pendragon and the maxi yacht of Venetian Fabio Sacco, partner of the Sailing Company and chairman of Alilaguna. This important yacht will show on her mainboard the message #EnjoyRespectVenezia, a symbol of the awareness campaign promoted by the City to demand respect for the historical city and its heritage and constant need for protection.
Veleziana will also be the end of a very high-end weekend with on Saturday 14th, the day before the regatta, the Venice Hospitality Challenge‘s maxi yachts will be displayed in the lagoon waters.
Saturday 14th, on the eve of the event, will also be a great evening of fun and parties. The crews will all be involved in a real music festival that will start at 19.30 at the San Giorgio Sports Centre and continue at Campaner. An evening of food and music to celebrate the spirit of sharing that animates this event dedicated to sport and sea and involving the whole city.
Vessels over 5 metres in length can take part in the Veleziana for a total of twelve categories in the race.
The route will be coastal and will depart from the Lido of Venice, south of the dam of San Nicolò, the entrance to the lagoon through the Port of Lido and the passage in the canal of San Nicolò at 1 O’clock. The two gates through which the boats will have to pass will be between the mouth of Porto del Lido and the entrance of the left Mose, and the one located near Nicelli airport after the island of Sant’Andrea at the cross of the Certosa Island (where a large number of boats involved in the race have their berths).
Arrival in St. Mark’s Basin is planned no later than 5 p.m., but for those who are not be able to arrive on time, the time they pass through the gates will be their arrival time.
The favourite boat in this edition is once again Maxi Jena, last year’s winner and already winner of the Over All trophy: a regatta for maxi sailing boats made of carbon fibre with vacuum infusion technology.
The awards will take place on Saturday November 25th, 2017 at 11.00 am at the venue of the Sailing Company on the Island of St. George. The winner will be awarded the Trofeo “Veleziana”, a perpetual challenge trophy that will have to be returned to the Venice Sailing Company by August 31st, 2018.
In short, the Velenziana will not simply be a spectacular regatta for those who will live it as protagonists but also a must-see event for any enthusiast of this wonderful sport.
